Lotus 49 is a Formula One racing car designed by Colin Chapman and Maurice Philippe for the 1967 F1 season. It was designed around the Cosworth DFV engine that would power most of the Formula One grid through the 1970s. 49 had problems in its first race for Hill, and it had spark plug trouble at the 1967 Belgian Grand Prix, held on the 8.76 mile (14.73 kilometer) Spa-Francorchamps. The 49 was a revolutionary design, and it was immediately successful. It won its first race, the 1967 Dutch Grand Prix, in the hands of Jim Clark. Clark went on to win four more races in the 49 that year, and he won the Formula One World Championship. Lotus 49 was also successful in 1968. Clark won three races in the 49, and he finished second in the World Championship. Graham Hill also won a race in the 49 in 1968. The 49 was less successful in 1969. Jochen Rindt won two races in the 49, but he was killed in a crash at the Italian Grand Prix. Jackie Stewart won the World Championship in a Matra-Ford, but the 49 was still a competitive car.
Lotus 49 was finally retired at the end of the 1970 season. It had won 12 races and two World Championships in its four-year career. It is considered to be one of the most successful Formula One cars of all time.
Lotus 49 is a significant car in the history of Formula One. It was the first car to be designed around the Cosworth DFV engine, and it was the first car to win a World Championship with that engine. The 49 was also a revolutionary design, and it helped to change the way Formula One cars were designed.
