1972 AMC Matador was a full-size car that was produced by American Motors Corporation (AMC) from 1971 to 1978. It was the first generation of the Matador, and it was available in two-door and four-door sedan, station wagon, and coupe body styles. Matador was designed by Richard Teague, who also designed the 1969-1970 AMX. It had a distinctive wedge-shaped design with a long, low hood, a sloping roofline, and a wide stance. The Matador was powered by a variety of engines, including a 232-cubic-inch (3.8-liter) inline-six, a 304-cubic-inch (4.9-liter) V8, and a 360-cubic-inch (5.9-liter) V8. The engine was mated to a three-speed manual or automatic transmission. Matador was available in a variety of trim levels, including base, Custom, and SST. The SST was the performance-oriented version of the Matador, and it was equipped with a 360-cubic-inch V8 engine, a four-speed manual transmission, and a sport-tuned suspension. The Matador was a popular car in the early 1970s, and it was one of the best-selling cars in the United States in 1972. However, sales declined in the late 1970s as fuel prices rose and Americans began to prefer smaller cars.
