Chevrolet Vega was a subcompact car that was produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1971 to 1977 model years. It was available in two-door hatchback, sedan, Kammback wagon, and panel van body styles. All models were powered by a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with an aluminum alloy block.
Vega was introduced in September 1970 as a 1971 model. It was Chevrolet’s first subcompact car, and it was designed to compete with the Ford Pinto and the AMC Gremlin. The Vega was initially well-received, and it was named Motor Trend’s Car of the Year for 1971. However, the car soon developed a reputation for poor reliability and rust problems.
The Vega was powered by a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 90 horsepower. The engine was available with a three-speed manual transmission or a two-speed automatic transmission. The Vega could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 13 seconds and had a top speed of 90 mph. Vega was offered in a variety of trim levels, including the base Vega, the Vega GT, and the Vega Cosworth. The Vega GT was a sportier version of the Vega that featured a more powerful engine, a sport suspension, and a body-color grille. The Vega Cosworth was a limited-edition model that was built in collaboration with the British engineering firm Cosworth. The Vega Cosworth was powered by a 16-valve engine that produced 110 horsepower. The Vega was not a sales success. Production peaked in 1973 with 350,000 units sold. Sales declined in subsequent years, and production ended in 1977. The Vega was replaced by the Chevrolet Chevette.
Chevrolet Vega Hatchback was a significant car in automotive history. It was the first car to be offered with a variety of features that are now commonplace, such as a catalytic converter, a hatchback body style, and a 16-valve engine. However, the Vega was also a car that was plagued by reliability problems. As a result, it did not achieve the sales success that Chevrolet had hoped for.
