Shenyang J-15 (Chinese: 歼-15; pinyin: Jiān-15), also known as the Flying Shark (Chinese: 飞鲨; pinyin: Fēishā), is a Chinese all-weather, twin-engine, carrier-based fourth-generation multirole fighter aircraft developed by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) and the 601 Institute, specifically for the People’s Liberation Army Naval Air Force (PLANAF) to serve on People’s Liberation Army Navy’s aircraft carriers. J-15 is based on the Russian Sukhoi Su-33, but it has been modified to meet the specific needs of the PLANAF. The J-15 is equipped with a variety of avionics and weapons, including the PL-12 air-to-air missile, the PL-15 air-to-air missile, and the KD-88 anti-ship missile. J-15 first flew in 2009 and entered service with the PLANAF in 2013. The J-15 is the first Chinese-made aircraft to be deployed on an aircraft carrier. J-15 is a capable fighter aircraft that has given the PLANAF a significant boost in airpower. The J-15 is expected to play a key role in the PLANAF’s efforts to protect China’s maritime interests.
