Flakpanzer Gepard is a German self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG) developed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann in the 1960s. It was based on the Leopard 1 tank chassis and armed with two 35 mm Oerlikon KDA cannons. The Gepard was designed to engage high-flying aircraft, such as bombers and reconnaissance planes, as well as low-flying targets, such as helicopters and cruise missiles. Gepard was first deployed in 1973 and served with the German Bundeswehr until 2010. It was also exported to Belgium, Brazil, and Romania. The Gepard saw combat in the Bosnian War and the Kosovo War. The Gepard was a highly effective SPAAG, and it was credited with shooting down over 200 aircraft during its service life. However, it was also expensive to operate and maintain, and it was eventually replaced by the MANTIS air defense system. Flakpanzer Gepard was a significant development in the history of SPAAGs. It was the first SPAAG to be armed with radar-guided cannons, and it had a very high rate of fire. The Gepard was also very mobile, and it could keep up with the armored formations it was designed to protect.
The Gepard was a successful SPAAG, and it served for over 30 years with the German Bundeswehr. It was also exported to several other countries, and it saw combat in two wars. The Gepard was eventually replaced by the MANTIS air defense system, but it remains a significant weapon in the history of SPAAGs.
