The North American P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber aircraft that served in the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) from 1941 to 1945. The Mustang was one of the most versatile aircraft of World War II and served in every theater of the war. It was used as a long-range escort fighter, a fighter-bomber, and a reconnaissance aircraft. The Mustang was also used by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and other Allied air forces. P-51 was designed by North American Aviation in response to a British specification for a fighter aircraft that could escort bombers to Berlin. The Mustang was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, which gave it superior performance at high altitudes. The P-51D is the most widely produced version of the Mustang. It was armed with six .50 caliber machine guns and could carry up to 2,000 pounds of bombs. The P-51D was also equipped with a drop tank, which extended its range to 1,600 miles. P-51 was a highly successful aircraft in World War II. It was credited with shooting down more enemy aircraft than any other Allied fighter during the war. The Mustang also played a major role in the strategic bombing campaign against Germany.
