PT boat (short for patrol torpedo boat) was a motor torpedo boat used by the United States Navy in World War II. It was a small, fast, and agile vessel that was designed to attack enemy ships and submarines. The Elco 80 was the most common type of PT boat used by the U.S. Navy during World War II. It was 80 feet long and had a displacement of 56 tons. It was powered by three Packard 4M-2500 V12 gasoline engines that produced a total of 4,050 horsepower. This gave the boat a top speed of 43 knots. Elco 80 was armed with two 21-inch torpedo tubes and two 20mm Oerlikon cannons. It also had a .50-caliber machine gun for self-defense. PT boats were a valuable asset to the U.S. Navy during World War II. They were responsible for sinking or damaging a significant number of enemy ships and submarines.
