Porsche 597 Jagdwagen (roughly translated as “hunting car”) is a light military vehicle, designed to fill the same general role as the Jeep, Kübelwagen and Land-Rover. A total of 71 Porsche 597s were manufactured, between 1955 and 1958, 49 of which were built for the civilian market (chassis numbers starting from 597-000101). Development costs for the vehicle amounted to approximately 1.8 million DM. The 597 was powered by a 1.5-liter air-cooled flat-four engine that produced 45 horsepower and 55 pound-feet of torque. The engine was mated to a four-speed manual transmission. The 597 could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 25 seconds and had a top speed of 62 mph. 597 had a unique amphibious design, with a watertight hull and a propeller. This allowed the vehicle to be driven through water at speeds up to 3 mph. The 597 was well-received by military and civilian customers alike. It was praised for its ruggedness, reliability, and versatility. However, the 597 was also criticized for its high price and relatively poor performance. Porsche 597 is a rare and collectible vehicle. It is a significant example of Porsche’s early foray into the military vehicle market.
