Sea Harrier FRS.1 is a British navalised version of the Hawker Siddeley Harrier. It was developed by Hawker Siddeley to serve on the Royal Navy’s aircraft carriers, and it entered service in 1978. The Sea Harrier is a vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) aircraft, which means that it can take off and land without a runway. This makes it a valuable asset for the Royal Navy, as it allows them to operate aircraft from their aircraft carriers even in confined areas. Sea Harrier is powered by a Rolls-Royce Pegasus Mk 104 turbofan engine, which gives it a top speed of 1,185 km/h (735 mph) and a range of 1,219 km (757 mi). It is armed with a variety of weapons, including Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, Sea Eagle anti-ship missiles, and cannons. Sea Harrier played a significant role in the Falklands War of 1982. It was responsible for shooting down 20 Argentine aircraft, including 12 Mirage IIIs, 5 A-4 Skyhawks, and 3 Pucarás. Sea Harrier was retired from service by the Royal Navy in 2006. It was replaced by the F-35B Lightning II, another V/STOL aircraft.
