Sikorsky S-69 (military designation XH-59) was an experimental co-axial compound helicopter developed by Sikorsky Aircraft as the demonstrator of the Advancing Blade Concept (ABC) under United States Army and NASA funding. S-69 was the first helicopter to use the ABC, which is a system that uses two sets of counter-rotating blades to generate lift. The ABC has several advantages over traditional helicopter designs, including increased speed, efficiency, and payload capacity. The S-69 had a two-man crew and could carry up to four passengers. It was powered by a Pratt & Whitney PT6T-3 turboprop engine that produced 1,360 horsepower. The S-69 had a maximum speed of 296 knots (336 mph) and a range of 350 nautical miles (402 miles). S-69 first flew on July 26, 1973. It completed a successful flight test program, demonstrating the capabilities of the ABC. However, the S-69 was not adopted by any military or civilian customers. The S-69 was a significant technological achievement that demonstrated the potential of the ABC. The ABC is still being studied and developed today, and it has the potential to revolutionize helicopter design.
