Train wheels are a type of wheel specially designed for use on railway tracks. The wheel acts as a rolling component, typically press fitted onto an axle and mounted directly on a railway carriage or locomotive, or indirectly on a bogie (in the UK), also called a truck (in North America). Modern railway wheels are usually machined from a single casting, also known as monoblock wheels. Some wheels, however, are made of two parts: the wheel core, and a tire (“tyre” in British English, Australian English and other variants) around the perimeter. Train wheels are designed to be strong, durable, and efficient. The wheels must be able to withstand the weight of the train and the forces of friction generated by rolling on the track. The wheels must also be able to roll smoothly and efficiently, without generating excessive noise or vibration. Train wheels are essential to the operation of railways. Without train wheels, trains would not be able to move. Train wheels are also a critical safety component, as they help to keep trains on the track.
