Willys MB and the Ford GPW, both formally called the U.S. Army Truck, 1⁄4‑ton, 4×4, Command Reconnaissance, commonly known as the Willys Jeep, Jeep, or jeep, and sometimes referred to by its Standard Army vehicle supply nr. G-503, were highly successful American off-road capable, light military utility vehicles.
The 1⁄4-ton jeep became the primary light, wheeled, multi-role vehicle of the United States military and its allies, with President Eisenhower once calling it “one of three decisive weapons the U.S. had during WWII.” With some 640,000 units built, the 1⁄4‑ton jeeps constituted a quarter of the total military support motor vehicles that the U.S. produced during the war, and almost two-thirds of the 988,000 light 4WD vehicles produced, when counted together with the Dodge WC series.
Willys MB was designed by Karl Probst of Willys-Overland. The design was based on a number of previous vehicles, including the Bantam BRC-40 and the Ford Pygmy. The MB was chosen over the Bantam and the Ford because it was the most rugged and reliable.
The Willys MB was powered by a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 60 horsepower. This engine was mated to a four-speed manual transmission. The MB could accelerate from 0 to 30 mph in 11 seconds and had a top speed of 56 mph.
MB was a simple and rugged vehicle that was easy to maintain. It was also relatively inexpensive to produce. This made it a popular choice for the military, which needed a vehicle that could be mass-produced quickly and cheaply.
The Willys MB was used extensively by the United States military during World War II. It was used for a variety of tasks, including reconnaissance, transportation, and towing. The MB was also used by the Allies, including the British, the Russians, and the French.
After the war, the Willys MB continued to be used by the military. It was also used by civilian organizations, such as the police and the fire department. The MB was produced until 1945, and it is considered to be one of the most important vehicles of the 20th century.
